Tear Trough Rejuvenation is one of the few truly effective weapons in the fight against the tired looking dark circles which plague so many of us.
The true causation of these dark under eye circles is in fact poorly understood. Stress, under-hydration, lack of sleep, alcohol and excess of bodily toxins may all play their part. A successful treatment to rejuvenate the under eye area can be equally complex.
First to understand is that this procedure is not suitable for all. If we are considering dermal fillers for a true tear trough deformity, the practitioner needs to be well versed in identifying this.
Often appearing similar but not treatable in the same way, are UNDER EYE BAGS (see below). These fatty deposits may create a pseudo-tear trough deformity at their inferior border. This requires surgery (Blepharoplasty), which I do not perform.
CAUTION: Treating the above patient with dermal fillers risks worsening the appearance of the eye bags. Furthermore, where there is under eye skin laxity, a terrible more wrinkled appearance may become apparent if a mid-face volumisation or cheek lift is performed.
Although never a pleasant experience, declining tear trough fillers on certain patients is our clinical duty. Thankfully some other treatments may be offered to somewhat improve the appearance here without dermal fillers. These may include laser rejuvenation, radio frequency skin tightening and micro-needling (Dermapen).
My training and experience in treating this area is key to successful patient outcomes and avoiding later disappointment. Understanding that synergistic treatments are often needed for the entire eye-cheek complex is essential for any practitioner.
